Pet hair embeds itself into seat fabric and carpet at an angle that standard vacuums cannot extract. These are the tools and techniques that actually work - from rubber gloves to commercial extractors.
If you have ever tried to vacuum pet hair from a car seat and watched the vacuum nozzle glide over the same patch three times while barely moving a strand, you understand the problem. Pet hair does not sit on top of fabric - it works its way into the weave at an angle, where suction alone cannot dislodge it. The static charge from pet fur makes the problem worse, causing hair to actively cling to fibres. You need mechanical agitation, not just suction.
This is the most effective low-tech solution for seat fabric. A damp rubber glove dragged across upholstery creates static friction that pulls pet hair out of the weave and into a manageable roll. A rubber squeegee (or even a dedicated pet hair squeegee tool) works the same way. Use overlapping strokes in one direction, then vacuum the gathered hair. This works remarkably well on velour, cloth, and short-pile carpet.
A fine pumice stone or a dedicated pet hair fabric brush is highly effective on flat seat surfaces. The abrasive texture grabs individual hairs and pulls them to the surface for vacuuming. Be careful on delicate or thin seat fabrics - test on an inconspicuous area first. For most standard cloth car seats, this method is safe and very effective.
The heavy-duty commercial variety (not the standard home lint roller) works well for a quick surface pass before extraction, but does not address deeply embedded hair. Think of it as a first-pass tool, not a solution.
Once surface pet hair has been agitated and vacuumed, a hot-water extractor flushes remaining hair and the dander, oils, and odors that come with it from deeper in the fabric. This step is what separates a true professional pet hair removal from a cosmetic pass. If your car carries dogs regularly and has not been extracted in over six months, the odor embedded in the seats is as significant as the visible hair.
