The Spring Detailing Guide for GTA Drivers: Where to Start

The Post-Winter Damage Assessment

By mid-March in the GTA, the average vehicle has been exposed to 18 to 22 road-salting events, dozens of freeze-thaw cycles, and hundreds of kilometres of salt-spray driving. The damage is not always visible at first glance. White salt residue on floor mats is obvious. But the calcium chloride that has seeped under door sills, into carpet backing, and bonded to wheel wells is doing its worst work out of sight. Spring detailing is as much about removing invisible chemical damage as it is about restoring appearance.

Step 1: Interior Salt Extraction (Most Urgent)

The first priority is removing road salt from the interior before warm temperatures arrive. Heat accelerates the chemical reaction between calcium chloride residue and carpet fibres, permanently setting stains and accelerating backing deterioration. Book your interior extraction in March or April before consistently warm weather settles in.

What a proper spring interior extraction covers:

• Full carpet hot-water extraction with pH-balanced salt neutralizer
• Floor mat deep clean and extraction (separately from vehicle carpet)
• Door sill and door jam cleaning - a consistently missed area where salt accumulates
• Trunk floor extraction
• Seat fabric or leather deep clean

Step 2: Exterior Paint Decontamination

A standard car wash does not remove road salt from paint - it removes the loose layer but leaves bonded salt, iron particles from brake dust, and industrial fallout embedded in the clear coat. Spring paint decontamination involves:

• Iron remover spray - A pH-reactive product that turns red on contact with iron particles and allows them to be safely rinsed away
• Clay bar treatment - A clay bar glided across the paint surface mechanically pulls out bonded contamination that chemicals cannot reach
• Hand wash and rinse - After decontamination, the surface is washed clean

After decontamination, the paint surface will feel dramatically smoother. This is the correct state for applying a protective sealant or beginning a ceramic coating process.

Step 3: Wheel and Undercarriage Attention

Wheels accumulate the densest concentration of road salt, brake dust, and road debris over winter. A proper spring wheel cleaning involves removing the wheel from the vehicle in professional settings, or at minimum a thorough chemical decontamination of all surfaces including the inner barrel. Wheel wells and undercarriage should be rinsed thoroughly with high pressure to dislodge packed salt and gravel.

Step 4: Paint Protection for Summer

Once the paint is decontaminated and clean, it is in an ideal state for protection. Spring is an excellent time to apply a synthetic sealant for summer coverage, or to book a ceramic coating if you have been considering one. A coating applied to properly decontaminated paint in spring weather conditions (10 to 25 degrees Celsius, low humidity) cures well and provides protection right through to the next winter season.

A Note on Timing

Do not wait until May or June for your spring detail. By then, salt has had extra weeks to bond more deeply. The ideal spring detail window for GTA and York Region drivers is late March through April. Road conditions are clean by then, temperatures allow proper product application, and the salt damage has not yet had time to set permanently into fabrics and paint.
