Electric vehicles are now a common sight in driveways across Newmarket, Markham, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill - and they come with their own detailing quirks. Teslas, Polestars, Mustang Mach-Es, Ioniqs, and the rest are not just gas cars with a battery. The way they are built changes what matters during a detail. Here is what an experienced detailer does differently.
Teslas in particular are known for relatively soft, thin clear coat from the factory, and several other EV brands share the trait. Soft paint scratches and swirls more easily than the harder clear coat on many German and Japanese gas cars. That makes two things more important, not less:
If you own a Tesla and have noticed swirl marks appearing faster than on your last car, the paint is not defective - it is just softer, and it rewards a more careful detailing approach.
Regenerative braking does most of the slowing in an EV, so the friction brakes get used far less than in a gas car. The result: dramatically less brake dust on the wheels. EV wheels stay visibly cleaner between washes, and the detailing focus shifts toward tire dressing, aero-cover cleaning, and the inner barrel rather than fighting baked-on brake dust. It is a small but real difference in how we approach the wheels.
The giant centre touchscreen in a Tesla or modern EV is the heart of the interior, and it needs care. Never spray an ammonia-based glass cleaner on it - ammonia degrades the anti-glare and oleophobic coatings on the screen. We clean these with a dry or barely-damp microfiber and a screen-safe cleaner, the same way you would treat a laptop or tablet display. Minimalist EV interiors also mean large uninterrupted dash and door panels where streaks and dust show easily, so the wipe-down has to be meticulous.
An EV is often a significant investment, and its soft paint and tech-heavy interior reward a detailer who understands the differences. Whether it is a Tesla, a Mach-E, or an Ioniq, the fundamentals - careful washing, paint protection, and surface-specific interior care - matter even more than on a typical gas car.
